THE traquility of the beautiful Berwickshire countryside was well and truly broken on Sunday as the motocross track at Langton Lees Farm, near Duns, played host to round three of the Scottish Adult Motocross Championship.
Pushing their bikes to the limit along with the very best riders in Scotland, was a trio of Borderers. While they failed to keep up with the leaders, two of them managed to better their season positions.
Galashiels' Darren Scott was sitting in 20th place before Sunday, a place he was not very happy to be.
He said: "The first two races of the season were on sand and not to my liking – I haven't done a lot of practice in the sand.
"I train a lot here, so a good result today will hopefully move me up the leaderboard."
And that's just what happened. A steady display over the three races saw him finish in ninth place, lifting him six places to 14th overall.
Experienced racer, Innerleithen's John McNeil, started the day two places behind Scott. He was travelling well through the field in his second race until disaster struck.
He said: "About two-thirds of the way in, I fell off and twisted my handlebars a bit, so the last quarter of the race was hard work.
"I'm happy with how the season is going. I'm an old-timer now as I'm approaching 40, so I'm one of the older guys in the pack."
Despite the set-back, he was able to finish 20th in the race and 22nd overall, raising him to 21st in the season rankings.
Peebles' Jackie Munro didn't have much fun. He finished 28th in the first race, but fell in the second and couldn't take part in the third.
He told us: "I didn't get a good start. I was trying a bit too hard to make up for it and overjumped the jump.
"I crushed my chest onto the handlebars and had to pull out, it wasn't too good.
"I've not had it looked at yet, I'll wait until I come to."
Gordon rider Ian Wilson qualified to ride with the top 40 riders on the day, and although he finished at the end of the pack in each race, he managed to add 15 points to his season total.
There was no stopping flyer Bryan Mackenzie. He and Neil Flockhart provided the most exciting battle of the day in the second race, the lead switching several times. Once, Mackenzie fell and was having problems getting his bike restarted. Flockhart went past and built up a sizable lead, only for Mackenzie – widely regarded as the best rider in Scotland – to eat away at it until he passed him with a couple of laps to go.
Mackenzie won all three races on the day and sits in fifth place overall, despite missing out on the second raceday of the series. He'll be the one to watch when the show rolls back into Duns for the last round in the championship on September 7.
As well as the main Scottish Championship race, the Berwickshire track also played host to several youth events over the course of the day.
Owner of the track, Chris Macvie, told TheSouthern: "It's been really good. The racing's been fantastic today and the track is holding up really well.
"The track here at Duns has been running for about 20 years now.
