ALTHOUGH Selkirk ran out convincing winners at the end, it took at least three outstanding saves from keeper John Dodds to keep Peebles out of the game.
It took 22 minutes for the Souters to open the scoring, John Waldie la
tching on to a Craig Evenden cross to flick the ball past a helpless Willie Turner in the Peebles goal. Just minutes later Selkirk missed a golden opportunity to double their tally from the penalty spot after Jason Kane had upended Darren Munro inside the Peebles box. Lee Stephen stepped up to take the resultant kick but his shot sailed just wide of the post.
Peebles came close to grabbing an equaliser when Peter Shearlaw went racing through, only to be foiled by a fine save from Dodds at full stretch. The Selkirk goalie was in action again shortly afterwards when saving a good Michael Holness attempt. At the other end, Alan Kerr also went close but the score remained 1-0 at half-time.
It was the hosts who finally added a second goal after 54 minutes, Evenden giving Turner no chance with a spectacular diving header. The next came from the spot, Darren Thomson having tripped Euan Pritchard inside the box, with Kerr securing the goal.
Play continued from end to end with both teams having chances but again it was Selkirk who cashed in, Evenden beating Turner all ends up with a powerful header to complete the scoring.
