THE climax to the District Junior Confined Tennis Tournament was played out at Kelso Orchard Tennis Club recently.
And the 2008 event had historic significance, with the president of Tennis Scotland attending for the first time.

Christine Lawrie was not only able to attend finals day, but also play a significant role in helping the refereeing team, led by Tennis Borders president Chris Smith.

The event boasted more than 120 players competing for 33 titles spanning age groups from nine and under through to 18 and under, with main draw events being supported by consolation events.

District tennis co-ordinator Elspeth Whitelaw said: "The tournament is moving forward in so many ways with a higher standard of play being seen across the board, especially with our younger players.

"I would like to think that this is a result of the big effort which has been put in by the club coaches over the last few years and that should only get better as we implement our progressive development plan."

The tournament itself provided some impressive individual performances with Claire McCulloch of Earlston reaching and winning all four events she entered. Her sister and doubles partner Lauren also managed to reach all of her finals, but only succeeded in one.

Michael Fairburn of Peebles was successful in the Under-18 boys' event at the grand age of 14 – a feat few have managed.

All of the players contributed to a fantastic event and the finals day had some brilliant matches, all of which were played with the utmost respect and discipline from the players.

This event is one which Tennis Borders is particularly proud of as all players and spectators enjoy it so much. It is a team effort with everyone mucking in to help host the event.

They're a good idea and I always have a look
So far so good but I'd like to see more in terms of numbers and variety
