THROUGHOUT the season we've been keeping tabs on all our local teams and players with the launch this season of the Borders Rugby Rankings and the Borders Rugby Awards, writes Stuart Cameron.
Some categories ended up being one-horse races, while others went down to the wire, and with the weather playing havoc with the fixture card, some categories even now are inconclusive.

But tomorrow evening at the Tait Hall, Kelso, nearly 40 awards
will be dished out to players and clubs as we fly the flag for Borders Rugby, and find out who has been voted the first Player Of The Season by members of the local media.

The five nominees are Fraser Harkness and Lee Jones from Selkirk, Peebles' Dan Boughtwood, and Jordan Macey and Scott Wight from Melrose. The winner will receive a trophy donated by Scottish Hydro Electric, who have also sponsored the annual Most Successful Borders Team trophy, won this year by Hawick YM who collated 83 points in their 22 matches.

All Borders sides playing Premiership or National League rugby were eligible to take part in this category as they all played 22 league matches. No cup or Border League fixtures were considered to ensure a level playing field in all categories.

The evening itself will raise money for the Hearts And Heroes Charity, and John Frame, who is heavily involved with the organisation of the Hearts and Heroes Challenge taking place on May 16, will be one of the guest speakers at the event as well as presenting the auction on the night.

John played for Gala and Scotland in the 1970s and is a highly-regarded after-dinner speaker. Stuart McCulloch from Radio Borders will close the evening with a speech, while BBC Radio Scotland presenter and Gala coach Gary Parker will host the evening. There will also be a special raffle with all the money raised going to one of the 17 Borders clubs to put towards grass-roots rugby at their club.
