THE last qualifying event of the Braidwood Summer Series took place on Sunday with members vying for the Hermiston Green Hat Challenge Cup, scored over both 40-target layouts.
Although several shooters were away at Auchterhouse, near Dundee, to shoot in the 2008 Scottish Sporting Championships, the Midlem ground still experienced an influx of almost 60 guns.
Only four targets separated the top 14 guns on the first half
layout. Billy Williamson (Linlithgow Bridge) distinguished himself as top gun by two targets from joint runners-up, Donald Livingston (Edinburgh) and David Bertram (Earlston), both 33.
This sterling performance earned him a Braidwood Green Hat for his first round one win as well as putting himself in contention for the Summer Series shoot-off.
Although shooting a steady 31 in the second half, Williamson was blown away by the outstanding performance of veteran shooter, Davy Scott (Haddington) who carded 38, two clear of Livingston.
This second round surge gave Scott a final total score of 69, matched only by Livingston. Stu Dawson of Bedlington was closest to them with 67. A shake of hands and the triumphant pair decided to share the cup.
On Sunday, September 7, the qualifiers for the annual Summer Series Championship shoot off over 80 targets for the Selkirk Glass trophy.
Jim McPhillips (Bathgate) enters the fray as hot favourite on an average position of 2.7.
Last year's winner Donald Livingston and Rab Neil (North Berwick) are closest at their 3.5 placing joined by Davy Craig (Edinburgh), Paul Allison and Joe Baumgart (both Hawick) and this week's winner Billy Williamson.
John Malone (Melrose) was delighted to hear his name drawn as the wild-card entry to join the squad.
Running parallel to the finale of the series, the remaining members contest the Summertime Trophy, currently held by Gordon Boertien (Lockerbie).
The end of series draw will also take place. Entries are from 11.30am-12.30pm with shooting from noon. All welcome.
