ETTRICK FOREST ARCHERS are continuing to take on the best in the country in the British Longbow Society's (BL-BS) Postal Portsmouth competition.
They've been going all out to record their best two scores for January, and four of them presented a pair of perfect hit records – 120 hits from 120 shots.

Colin Cairney still leads the way from the 20-yard mark, closely followed by Mike and Elain
e Pearson, and the fast-improving Alan Lindsay.

All they need to work on now is to build their points tally so they can begin to compete with the elite archers from England. However, all the local competitors are delighted with their steady progression and they are far from being disgraced in the national set-up.

In fact, given that the club itself is only three years old, the scores they have recorded during the last few months are quite remarkable.

There is a bit of competitiveness locally, as well, in the team challenge. Although Tweed held a slight advantage in November, the Yarrow squad, led by Crackshot Cairney, are beginning to run away with it.

The archers are still using their new premises within the old L&F factory in Selkirk. Having this facility has helped their scores no end, as they can arrange to make use of it almost any night of the week. And all that extra practise has also helped them in the longer target distance outdoors, if Sunday's 50-yard practice at Thirladean was anything to go by.

The Postal Portsmouth ends at the end of this month and the BL-BS outdoor season begins in earnest in March, with the first event being the Spring Forward Clout meeting at Mugdock.
