PRIMARY 2, 3 and 4 players at Jedburgh Badminton Club competed in an inter-schools tournament last week.
A large contingent from Howdenburn was split into two teams to compete against Ancrum and Parkside players. More of a games night than a badminton tournament, spirits were high as 25 youngsters played for their schools in a variety of games involving racquets and shuttles.

The noise was quite deafening as the players jumped up and down, cheering on their team-mates.

Club coach John Peters said: "They may be young but after introducing a competitive element to the fun and games, the determination and effort was obvious from the first whistle."

Ancrum took an early lead but Howdenburn (1) were never far behind. The competition was fierce and the coaches had to remain vigilant. At half-time, Ancrum were still in the lead but Howdenburn (2) were level with Howdenburn (1), followed by Parkside.

With the coaches exhausted and the players ready for more, the final event was completed, leaving Ancrum as the overall winners followed by Howdenburn (1), Howdenburn (2) and then Parkside.

z Children aged eight to 13 from the Borders can attend badminton sessions at Jedburgh Grammar School during the Easter break.

Two sessions are available on April 9 and 10 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Please apply in advance to the Sports Development Unit, Galashiels, which can be contacted on 01896 756274.
