Joanna Thomson, pictured, is the designer and maker of the jewellery that is presented each year to the Beltane Queen and her attendants.
There are bracelets for the Queen and her Maid and Shield Brooches for the Courtiers. For the recipients, these gifts become treasured mementos of their involvement with the festival. The bracelets depict the crown for the Queen and three fish motif of Peebles either side that make up the links, and the shields have the three fish.
She also makes the Cleikum Brooch that is presented at the St Ronan’s Border Games Week and also undertook the refurbishment of the Melrose crown. Joanna considers it to be an honour to be involved in the Borders festivals because they are such an important part of life in the region.
Joanna had lived and worked in and around Peebles for nearly 30 years, working in her purpose- built studio just outside the town, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to buy her unique jewellery designs all made in precious metals.
The Beltane Jewellery is only one string to Joanna’s bow. Rings, pendants, brooches, cufflinks, kilt pins, you name it Joanna can make it! And then there are the gemstones – from resetting and remodeling family jewellery to working with sumptuous emeralds and sparkling diamonds, Joanna also has a beautiful selection of some more unusual precious stones to choose from.
