The odds are heavily stacked against you – don't take the risk.
That’s the Christmas message from police to drivers who, despite repeated warnings over the potentially devastating results, still think they’ll get away with driving home after a few drinks.
A month-long crackdown targeting festive revellers was
launched by Borders police this week and will include frequent road checks throughout the region, with anyone caught committing any type of moving traffic offence being automatically breathalised.
And anyone found to be driving under the influence will receive a minimum driving disqualification of a year.
Sergeant Helen Birrell said: “We want the public to enjoy themselves at this time of year but are appealing to them not to take risks.
“Please don’t be tempted to drink and drive. It’s just not worth it and you’re putting both yourself and others in serious danger.”
Neil Richardson, Assistant Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police, added: “The consequences of getting behind the wheel while under the influence can be catastrophic and there are countless numbers of drivers who have taken a gamble and lost, many times paying with their own lives or the lives of others.
“Add to that the risk of losing your job and the effect that will have on your family, and it is clear that drinking and driving could be the most foolish decision you will ever make in your life.”
