HUNDREDS of local tree lovers are taking part in National Tree Week, which started yesterday.
Countryside ranger Keith Robeson said 16 schools and four other community groups will be planting 1,300 trees over the 10-day event.
The £2,500 for the trees and their protection is coming from Scottish Borders Council’s tree grant scheme.
Mr Robeson said: “We are hoping to encourage groups and schools to plant native trees in their grounds and community woodlands to benefit wildlife. Hopefully the planting can be used as an educational resource – and also it’s improving the grounds.”
Alongside local schools, work includes volunteers planting 120 trees at Darnick Community Woodland.
