Pupils from St Mary’s school, Melrose, learned about and made habitat piles for wildlife in The Nutwood on Friday.

They also put up extra bird and bat boxes in the trees in the hope this will attract more insects and birds to The Nutwood.

This is the first of the community involvement schemes undertaken by Melrose in Bloom this year. Later, there will be a hanging basket and photographic competitions, as well as tree planting and wildflower sowing.

Melrose residents can apply for their free, compost-filled hanging basket from Quin Dunlop on 01896 822224.
