AMERICAN roots band Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three will be riding the crest of a wave by the time they return to play the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles on July 2.
The band, on tour in Netherlands, have just learned that their new album, Middle of Everywhere, has gone straight to the No3 slot on the Euro-American chart on its release on this side of the Atlantic.
The chart is compiled from returns sent to almost 70 radio presenters who, like the sell-out audience in Peebles last year, have been beguiled by the combo.
When the band took the legendary Newport Folk Festival by storm, America’s big-circulation Spin magazine described them as one of the outstanding highlights of the entire event. In no time, the four-piece, from St Louis, Missouri, had become one of the biggest draws on the US circuit.
The band was flown over as one of the main headline acts for Shetland Folk Festival in April. Afterwards, the Shetland Times carried a manner headline declaring: “Pokey LaFarge: The Best Act EVER”.
Last year, they made their UK debut with appearances not only in Peebles, but at Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, and Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Jack White of the White Stripes has just recorded and produced a single for the band on his own Third Man Records label, and declared himself a fan.
