A man has been seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash on the A7 just south of Selkirk.

He was trapped for more than an hour after a car left the road and careered down an embankment about a mile from the St Boswells junction early on Tuesday evening.

Fire and Rescue Service crews from Galashiels and Selkirk used specialised cutting gear to free the man from the wreckage.

Local paramedics and the Medic One unit from Edinburgh were part of the rescue operation.

The injured man was taken by the Search and Rescue helicopter from Prestwick to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The A7 was closed for several hours to allow a police investigation to take place.
