A GALASHIELS motorist had a lucky escape on Friday morning as heavy snow brought havoc to roads in the central Borders.

The 36-year-old woman lost control of her car as she descended the steep and untreated Ellwyn Crescent, her Ford Mondeo careering onto Melrose Road and colliding with a double decker bus and a wall.

The road was closed for a time while she was removed from her car by the Fire and Rescue Service before she was taken to the Borders General Hospital and treated for a broken ankle. No-one on the bus was injured.

A police spokesman said Friday’s snow had resulted in several minor road traffic accidents in the area between Lauder to the north and Hawick to the south.
