Traditional bunting to put in an early appearance

THE traditional true blue and scarlet bunting of the Royal and Ancient Burgh will be hoisted earlier than usual this year, writes Andrew Keddie.

The display, boosted by 50 new strings of flags, will be erected in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations which take place over the extended weekend of June 2-5, although local schools, unlike some in the region, will not be on holiday on Tuesday, June 5.

“We want the town to look her best for the jubilee as well as for Olympic Torch relay on Thursday, June 14, and, of course, for Selkirk Common Riding the following day,” said Common Riding Trust clerk Johnnie Thomson.

The trustees also intend purchasing a further 50 strings of bunting prior to the 2013 commemorations of the quincentenary of the Battle of Flodden, the date of which is September 9.
