CAPITAL rugby stars visited Selkirk High School to give pupils a lesson in healthy eating.
Edinburgh prop Lewis Niven and second row powerman Esteban Lozada teamed up with Selkirk’s Scottish cap and depute head teacher Graham Marshall to dish out the links between nutritional meals and sport.
The visit was organised by Quality Meat Scotland which sponsors Scottish Rugby and backs the School of Rugby – so it was little wonder that red meat was on the team sheet.
Scotland A cap Lewis and Argentinian internationalist Esteban mauled down with pupils in a bid to compile the healthiest tortilla wrap.
Graham commented: “We are pleased to be involved with the School of Rugby initiative. It informs students about the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, in a way that is both fun and educational.
The high school has a proud rugby culture and the School of Rugby has helped preserve and develop this. All the students involved have benefitted from the programme.”
Jennifer Robertson is a dietician and Quality Meat Scotland’s health and education co-ordinator. She commented: “These workshops build on Quality Meat’s existing health and education programme.
“Pupils are given the opportunity to ask the players about their diets, the part red meat plays in meal plans and the nutritional benefits it provides.”
Scotland’s head of community rugby, Colin Thomson, added: “We have established partnerships with 19 schools, all of varying playing levels, who have committed to establishing and developing this initiative in their school community.
“We believe passionately that by working with the education sector and the selected schools, we will demonstrate the educational benefits of rugby to young people and their communities.”
The programme is funded through the Cashback for Communities Scheme using cash confiscated from criminals.
