ITEMS belonging to one of the Borders’ best-known former jockeys and racehorse trainers will go under the auctioneer’s hammer later this month, writes Mark Entwistle.
The retiral sale of several hundred items of equine equipment is on behalf of John Haldane – affectionately known throughout the Borders horseracing fraternity as Swanee – and will be held at John Swan’s livestock mart next Thursday.
The sale catalogue includes Mr Haldane’s horse box and car, as well as a large selection of stable rugs, paddock clothing, bridles, five saddles, halters, girths, racing girths, clippers, magneto pulse rug and a power washer.
Swan’s managing director, Jack Clark, is hoping for a big turnout for the sale in order to benefit Mr Haldane, who holds a full trainer’s licence and lives at Whitelee, near St Boswells.
“Swanee Haldane is a former national hunt jockey well known across the Borders,” explained Mr Clark.
“In recent years he has trained many point-to-pointers, as well as keeping hunters and running a livery. Now that he has decided to retire I’m hoping this will be a great sale.
“Swanee told me he has a lot of stuff to dispose of and his hope is that a lot of people can make use of it.”
The catalogue for this sale may be viewed and downloaded from the www.johnswan.co.uk website, or collected at the firm’s office in Newtown St Boswells. Viewing and registering of purchasers will be from 10am on the morning of the sale.
