Stingy with grit

I met a Scottish Borders Council worker who told me councillors had spent £20,000 on coffee machines and more on fancy bins that magically opened with a foot beside the bin.

He was sprinkling grit on steps and had been told to cut back on Tweedbank, only to do bits that were desperate.

One place I thought needed gritted was the community centre which was like a skating rink. I phoned up the council, but got no help.
