Star turn

I would like to thank the 146 guests who attended the Gala Star Vets charity lunch on January 29 at Gala Rugby Football Club.

This was a record number for the event which raised £2,700 on the day. This money will be equally divided between the two nominated charities for this year, namely the Rowan Boland Trust and Border Macmillan Nurses. Money from the lunch will also go to support the David Loughton Memorial P7 tournament to be held at Netherdale.

A very special thanks goes to the main sponsor of the lunch, Davidson Land Services, and to the many other sponsors too numerous to mention.

A heartfelt thanks also goes to Ian McLaughlan, SRU president and lifelong friend of the late Dunc Paterson, who entertained the company with stories of when Dunc and him were team mates. A big thanks also to Scocha who gave us a song or two, all in aid of the good causes aforementioned.

Thanks also to GRFC, in particular Gordon Keddie and Mike Behill, who worked hard behind the scenes to make the lunch a great success.

Finally, I would like to thank a man, without whom the Star charity lunch would not have raised more than £18,000 for charity in its nine-year history – former Star player Douglas Richardson has worked tirelessly over that period to ensure the event has been, and remains, a resounding success.

I would like to thank those who participated in the Will Aid campaign which took place all over the UK during November.

Will Aid has confirmed that more than £1million has been raised with donations still to come in. I was very impressed by the number of people who came to see us in Kelso, raising almost £2,000 for this very worthwhile campaign.

Will Aid serves not only to raise money for nine hard-working charities, but also to highlight the importance of making a will.

On behalf of the Selkirk Lifeboat Committee I would like to thank the general public who gave most generously to our recent collection in Asda, Galashiels. The total sum raised for the RNLI was £345.
