David Richard Clover landed the first spring salmon of the season on the Tweed.

He was fishing on The Junction at Bridge Pool, assisted by boatman Gavin Brown, when he hooked the 16lb springer – one of 16 bagged on opening day. The hen fish was caught on an Eternal Optimist, using a Hardy Gem and Ultralite reel. The fish, once verified, was released back into the river.

As is tradition, there was a good turnout at a social evening at Tweedside Tackle, Kelso, on the opening day, attended by fishers and boatmen.

The event was topped off with the presentation to David of the Tweedside Tackle Trophy, presented by Tim Pilcher. Artist Jason Sweeney, who made the trophy in 2007, turned up too. David also received a certificate and goodie bag.

Opening day this year was reported to be the best on The Junction since 1976, according to head boatman Billy Jack.
