Philanthropic Souters who want to help those affected by the current famine situation in Africa are being asked to join a new satellite Rotary club in Selkirk.
The satellite, to be known as Ettrick Satellite Rotary Club, requires only eight members to start and it will be the first of its kind to be formed in the Borders.
Meetings will be held at lunch time at Ettrick Riverside on a weekly basis.
This is a new era for Rotary International as it evolves for this very important cause.
In the UK Rotary International has more than 1,800 clubs, consisting of more than 50,000 men and women from all walks of life. The Rotary Club of Selkirk has been helping the community for more than 50 years and is now looking to expand to take on the cause of famine relief.
Rotarian Paul Tomlinson said: “Working towards the relief of the current famine, is a really important cause and we require newcomers to champion the way forward in Selkirk, adding value to the excellent work already being undertaken by Selkirk Rotary Club.
“The club will also gain the accolade of being the first Rotary satellite club to be created in the Borders.
“Selkirk is known for having one of the most active Rotary clubs in the district, and it would be good to show what the town has to offer by developing in this way.
Many business people are in Ettrick Riverside at lunchtime anyway, and this would be a fantastic opportunity for them to work together to offer their support.”
In order to make a difference, the new satellite club will require a leader, committee members and helpers.
The club will be given instant recognition and support from current members of Selkirk Rotary, until they reach 20 members, when they can then stand as an independent club.
The club will be expected to utilize the skills, expertise and dedication of their members to help improve the lives of people in communities both at home and abroad, with the first goal to be working towards famine relief.
