Scrap metal thieves hit the roads

THE scourge of scrap metal crime has hit the Borders road network.

Police yesterday informed Scottish Borders Council that 21 gully covers, worth a total of £10,000, were stolen in the region during the past three weeks.

Targeted routes included the A7 north of Galashiels between the Bowland-Gilston junction; the B6360 between Tweedbank roundabout and the Abbotsford House car park; the B6374 from Tweedbank roundabout to the Darnick junction; and the A68 from Leaderfoot to Soutra.

Anyone who has seen suspicious activity on these stretches of road over the last month is asked to contact the police. Information is also sought following the theft of copper piping worth £200 from the Scottish Gas depot in Winston Road, Galashiels, last weekend.
