SCHOOLS and roads remain closed as further snow fell overnight across the Borders.

Scottish Borders Council chiefs had planned to open schools as normal today but more heavy snow last night meant its resilient procedure was activated again.

That means all school transport is cancelled, with nine primary schools shut completely.

The A68 at Carter Bar and A697 between Greenlaw and Carfraemill remain shut, while an overturned lorry at Mosspaul on the A7 between Langholm and Hawick has partially blocked the road.

The A7 accident has caused problems for First Bus’ X95 service, with the 9.10am and 10.10am buses to Carlisle cancelled.

Other X95 and 62 services have been delayed by up to 30 minutes because of the weather conditions.

Police have advised drivers to take extra care as The Met Office amber warning remains in place.

A Traffic Scotland spokesman said: “Conditions may be hazardous and drivers should exercise extra caution.

“Winter driving is a question of common sense and drivers should ask themselves if they really need to travel when conditions are poor.

“No-one should ever place themselves at risk on the road and it may be worth considering making alternative arrangements such as delaying travel until conditions improve or using public transport.

“If you are travelling on the roads you should ensure you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions, making sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed for several hours.”

The snow is due to become lighter this afternoon as winds ease off.
