SAFETY inspectors are probing the death of a worker at the Scottish Borders Abattoir in Galashiels, writes Bob Burgess.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after 11am today but the man – believed to be in his early 40s – was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s understood he was struck by a piece of equipment used at the Winston Road premises.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and that the death was being investigated by inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive.

Police said the man’s name would not be released until next of kin had been informed.

The Galashiels abattoir is the only one in the Borders.

It was sealed off by police after the accident and The Southern was unable to contact the owners for a statement.
