Responsibility for our roads

Councillor Kenneth Gunn claims that our “crumbling roads ... were inherited as part of the devolution settlement before which the responsibility for building and repairing roads lay with the Ministry of Transport in London (Southern January 26).

For his own political ends the councillor may wish to blame the UK Government for Scotland’s problems, but he shows his ignorance in doing so.

It was as long ago as April 1956 that powers relating to the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in Scotland transferred from the Ministry of Transport to the Department of Health for Scotland (subsequently the Scottish Development Department).
