Cadets from 2180 (Galashiels) Squadron had a very special visitor when a member of the RAF’s elite Red Arrows aerobatic display team dropped in.

Flt Lt Stewart Campbell, from Peebles, talked to the youngsters about his day job of flying fast jets, thrilling crowds, promoting the RAF and British industry.

After inspecting the cadets on parade and viewing squadron activities, Flt Lt Campbell spoke about his role in the Red Arrows and the RAF.

Cadets were treated to a fascinating and detailed insight to a day in the Red Arrows. Flt Lt Campbell joined the ‘Reds’ last year and has just completed his first year flying the famous red Hawk aircraft at shows across the world.

Cadets from the squadron first met Flt Lt Campbell in 2008 when he was chosen as the RAF’s Tucano display pilot and arranged a visit to his base at RAF Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire.

It was also a very special night for one young member of the squadron when Flt Lt Campbell presented Cadet Ewan Ramage, from Melrose, with the squadron’s Best Cadet Trophy for 2014.

Ewan was also presented with a wing blue for swimming after winning two gold and one silver medal at a recent competition.

At the conclusion of the evening, Flt Lt Campbell was presented with an engraved quaich to commemorate his visit. The squadron is hoping to visit Flt Lt Campbell and the Red Arrows at their RAF Scampton base next year.
