A 49-year-old Irvine man suffered serious injuries on Tuesday, after a concrete railway sleeper came loose and struck his leg at a Borders Railway construction site at Wilderhaugh, Galashiels.

The man was off-loading sleepers, aided by another man operating a crane, when the accident happened.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to the BGH and then Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
