Planning for jobs

I agree with A Nichol (letters, February 10) that the planning process is confusing.

I also agree that councillors should consider jobs as an important factor, but the wider, longer-term picture should also be taken into account.

In Newcastleton there is land available under the five-year plan for housing, and building should go ahead on that space rather than shoehorning houses into unsuitable garden spaces. I assume that other areas in the Borders have allocated building land and the question should be why that land isn’t being used to create jobs in the building industry.
