Peebles ready for belter of a Beltane

EXCITMENT is building in Peebles as we approach the start of the 2012 Beltane Festival.

The timetable will be as follows:

Sunday, June 17: Inaugural Service at the Cross Kirk at 6pm.

Monday, June 18: Primary school disco in Drill Hall. primary 3,4,5 from 6-7.15pm. primary 6 and 7 from 7.30-9pm.

Tuesday, June 19: Children’s sports at Hay Lodge Park. Starts around 6.45pm.

Wednesday, June 20: Installation of the Cornet, his Lass and Supporters on Parish Church steps at 6.15pm. Cornet leads mounted cavalcade to “Ride the Marches”.

At 7.15 pm, Warden of Neidpath installed and gives annual address. At 8.30pm, mounted cavalcade fords the Tweed above Fotheringham Bridge in Hay Lodge Park.

At 9pm, riders head up to the north side of the golf course for the horse races, including the famous Beltane Bell event.

At 10.15pm, the Cornet, Lass and supporters dance the reel in the High Street, followed by the offer of the Australian Stirrup Cup and the presentation of the Beltane Bell.

Thursday, June 21: the Beltane Concert in Burgh Hall. Starts 7.30pm. Followed by the Cornet’s Walk.

Friday, June 22: Fancy dress parade judging starts at 7pm. Parade starts 7.30pm.

Saturday, June 23: Decorated houses judged at 7am.

z 8.30am – Rideout leaves South Park Industrial Estate for Cademuir Hill and Cademuir Forest and joins Grand Procession around 11.15am at the foot of Springhill Road.

z 9.15am – The grand procession heads down from Halyrude School to the High Street via March Street and the Northgate, led by Pipe Band.

z 9.20am – Official party marches to the Mercat Cross, where the proclamation of Beltane Fair takes place. The chairman presents the Cornet with the Cornet’s Medal.

z 10am – Coronation of the Beltane Queen. The Queen, Court, officials and children leave for grand procession. Cornet and his supporters proclaim the Burgh Bounds.

z 11.15am – The gGrand procession, led by the Cornet, his supporters and mounted followers takes in most of the major town routes. The procession of Queen and Court, officials and decorated lorries makes its way through town.

z 1pm – Service of Remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony at County War Memorial.

z 7pm – Bands beat retreat on Peebles High Street.

Sunday, June 24: Beltane Sports, Whitestone Park.
