A man was left needing hospital treatment following an assault by a gang of about a dozen men in the car park of a Galashiels supermarket.

The attack took place outside the Tesco store in Paton Street at around 3.20am yesterday, April 9.

The victim was set upon after he and and three other men became involved in a verbal altercation.

Their initial disagreement was with two men, but a further 10 or so then intervened, causing the dispute to escalate into violence.

The 21-year-old victim sustained what police described as a serious leg injury and was taken to the Borders General Hospital at Melrose for treatment.

Another man, aged 26, sustained minor facial injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance staff.

Detective Sergeant Barry Roebuck, of Galashiels police station’s criminal investigation department, said: “This is completely unacceptable behaviour, and we continue to work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

“We’d urge anyone who may have witnessed this, or who has any information which can help with our enquiries, to get in touch.”

Potential witnesses can call police on 101.
