Yellow warning issued for Borders as snow returns
DRIVERS have been warned of continued hazardous driving conditions tonight and tomorrow morning.
Motorists had to contend with heavy snowfall across the Borders last night, with Eskdalemuir recording 14 centimetres of the white stuff - the most in the UK.
And Scottish Borders Council are warning for more to come, with a yellow (be aware) warning in place from 7pm tonight until 11am tomorrow.
SBC’s Rob Dickson, director of environment and infrastructure, said: “Whilst snowfall has not been as significant as two weeks ago, temperatures have remained below freezing all day.
“This means that although primary routes have been ploughed and salted twice already today, motorists will still be experiencing difficult driving conditions with some snow and ice on the road.
“As always our priority is to maintain our primary network in the safest conditions possible, so while some secondary routes have been treated, many have not been.
“At this point, with the forecast suggesting freezing conditions and further snow showers throughout the night and into tomorrow, it may be later tomorrow before resources are available to treat secondary routes.
“We cannot over-emphasise that people should take extra care on the roads and drive to the prevailing conditions.”
All schools in the Borders opened today but a number of school buses were cancelled.
All social work offices are open, while Home Care is operating in accordance with its priority grading to ensure that everyone who needs a call gets one.
An SBC spokesperson said: “In an emergency, residents should call 0300 1800 100 (and select option 4) during normal working hours and the emergency duty team on 01896 752111 out of normal working hours.
“SBC is working hard to maintain routine recycling and refuse collections. If a collection is missed, please leave your wheelie bin out, and when safe, our crews will try to return to that area.”
All waste transfer stations, community recycling centres and the landfill site are open.
