Wedding gowns get chance of second outing

WOMEN are being invited to don wedding dresses for a special ball in Galashiels in aid of a cancer charity close to the heart of a local woman.

The event is being organised by Newtown St Boswells nurse Lorna Skelly, who married while undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer in 2007.

Last year’s ball raised more than £2,500 for the Eve Appeal, a gynaecological cancer charity.

Due to popular demand Lorna has arranged another ball for Saturday, October 6 in the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels.

Entertainment will be provided by Selkirk Pipe Band, international comedy vocalist Brenda Collins and band the Gangsters of Groove. There will be a buffet and raffle.

Lorna told TheSouthern: “I always wanted to hold a ball where you could wear your wedding dress, because you normally never ever get to wear it again.”

Having feared that she would never be able to have a family after her diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment, Lorna was fortunate to fall pregnant in March 2008, giving birth to son Ryan in December of that year.

She recently gave birth to second son Jamie, and has plans to expand the family further, if she can persuade husband, Iain.

Tickets for the ball, priced at £20, are available from facebook.com/galaeveappeal, Niki’s Bar, Galashiels or by calling Lorna on 07866 831132. Women are asked to wear wedding dresses or gowns and men kilts or suits.

Doors and the bar open at 6.30pm, and there will be a free glass of bubbly for all.
