The great escape...

GALE force winds and torrential rain lashed the Borders for 48 hours on Monday and Tuesday.

Both the Met Office and Scottish Environment Protection Agency issued flood alerts.

In some areas the alerts were upgraded to warning level and the entire Borders was at one time at amber – just short of a major red alert.

The emergency control room operated by Scottish Borders Council from its HQ at Newtown St Boswells was staffed overnight.

Council staff worked through the night clearing fallen trees and branches from roads and there were only a small number of closures.

Some rivers and burns burst their banks, but the fire and rescue service said they did not receive a single call for assistance.

A small number of consumers suffered power cuts – including Heriot school.
