Terrier help saves OAP owner’s life

A COLDINGHAM pensioner’s dog helped save his life at the weekend, writes Sally Gillespie.

The terrier, untethered, stayed close to his 73-year-old owner after he fell into a gully near Coldingham over the weekend.

The missing man was seen in the Berwickshire village on Friday morning and reported missing later that day by his family. Searches through Saturday failed to find him and Border Search and Rescue Unit (BSARU) was called in on Sunday morning.

Within a hour of 18 team members being deployed, the man was found, unconscious and suffering from hypothermia, by a local farmer and was treated by BSARU before being taken by ambulance to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

BSARU team leader Seymour Haugh said: “The fact that he had been missing, along with his dog, for 48 hours, during which the weather had been pretty unrelentingly foul made the family and everyone involved in the search fear the worst. That he was found alive is testimony to his tenacity.

“We have seen previous cases where the close proximity of a casualty’s dog has helped to maintain body temperature, and this may well hold true in this instance.”
