Taste of Cuba as Salsa Celtica head for Peebles

Salsa Celtica

Salsa Celtica

Salsa Celtica’s one-of-a-kind synthesis of Scottish and Irish traditional music with Latin American elements has taken them all over the world.

They have topped the New York and LA music charts and the European world music charts, appearing at major Celtic, jazz and salsa festivals and starring as themselves in a feature film.

Borders audiences will have a chance to see them in concert at the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles, next Friday, June 17.

The roots of Salsa Celtica are in the mid-90s when they emerged alongside artists such as Shooglenifty and Martyn Bennett in the clubs and bars of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

After they recorded their first album, Monstrous y Demonios, (Monsters and Demons), the band made a musical pilgrimage to Cuba, hanging out with some of the world’s top salsa bands.

They then released The Great Scottish Latin Adventure, a synthesis of the new experiences and skills the Cuban tour had given them. This led to invitations to tour the salsa communities of the US, including performance in front of 5,000 ecstatic New Yorkers, which made them a major force on the world music scene. Since then, the band has continued to develop its unique, eclectic style.

The line-up in Peebles will be stripped down to a smaller, acoustic format called The Small Island Sessions.

The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15. Details on 01721 725777 (www.eastgatearts.com).
