KELSO Civic Week is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, writes Sally Gillespie.

Bucking the predominant weather, Sunday’s popular family day escaped the rain and crowds enjoyed the traditional five-a-side football, quoiting, tug of war, target golf, shows and bouncy castle in sunshine at Shedden Park.

Kelso Laddies Association secretary Richie Allan said: “It was very nice, the sun shone and there was a good crowd of people there.”

Saturday’s tennis challenge adults section was won by a woman for the first time, Kate Bull, while regular past winner Angus Miller took the junior section. The senior five-a-side football competition moved from Woodside Park to the town’s high school to save the ground and was won by Hoggi’s Dirty Arabs, a team that included ex-Kelso Laddie Andrew Haig.

On Sunday triathlete Colin Stevenson won the senior men’s cup in the cycle race, Jane Holmes won the senior women’s section, Jeremy Smith won the veterans category and Sam McNeill scooped the juniors Ex-Kelso Laddies’ Cup. Kelso Wheeler Jeremy Smith also won the Abbey Fitness Centre trophy for the Kelso resident with the fastest time.

Sunday’s 10km fun run through the grounds of Floors Castle saw 154 runners complete the race when course records were set in the senior men and women’s categories. Winners were Robert Gilroy from Cambuslang (senior men 33 minutes), Carnethy Harriers’ Gillian Mykura (senior women’s section 39.19), Grant Wilkie from Corstorphine (male veterans 35.04) and Gala Harriers’ Jennifer Forbes (female veterans 41.58). The team prize was won by Gala Harriers and the local male and female prizes went to Darrell Hastie and Jacqueline Patterson.

At Sunday’s family day the junior five-a-side football aged 14 and under cup was won by Jordan and Company while the best aged 11 and under team was Epic Lads. The tug of war was won by The Missfits who included Left Hand Man Murray Playfair; the target golf was won by Liam Jarvis and T Grieve triumphed in the quoiting.

In the evening Kelso Laddie Callum Vickers laid a wreath at the town’s war memorial before attending Kelso North Church for the Kirkin’ service.

A cavalcade of more than 50 rode to Heiton on Monday evening after record entries in the pet show at the Tait Hall earlier.

On Tuesday 92 horses and riders followed the Kelso Laddie to Stichill, Hume and Ednam, meanwhile Ryan Hogarth was on his way to winning the men’s darts competition and his mum Irene took the ladies’ title.

Previous winner Rachael Ward won the best turned out horse and rider on both Monday and Tuesday nights and winners at the jumping and gymkhana at Springwood Park on Monday evening were: show jumping – Alex Cassie (senior) and her sister Leah (junior), Katy McFadyen (under 10s); gymkhana - Katy McFadyen (TD5 confined and under 9 years) and her brother Duncan (under 16s).
