Specialist Glass lays off six
THE slump in home improvements and new-builds has hit Hawick-based Specialist Glass Designs Ltd which has laid off six of its 14-strong staff.
The Croft Road firm was founded in 2000 and specialises in producing ornate double-glazed door panels for the larger panelling companies which then supply the trade.
“January, February and March are traditionally quiet for us, but the economic downturn has forced us into this situation. Our first priority must be to ensure the company’s survival,” said a spokesperson for the firm.
“These six permanent staff have been laid off, not paid off, and the owner is optimistic the situation will improve and they will be re-engaged when this happens.”
When the housebuilding boom was at its height, the firm had a workforce of 25.
