Snow update - Scottish Borders Council work on roads

ROADS are continuing to be treated after heavy snow hit the Borders this morning.

The snow showers have eased this afternoon and a yellow be aware warning for snow expired at 10am.

Scottish Borders Council say all roads are currently passable with care, with gritting teams working on priority routes since 6am this morning.

SBC’s director of environment and infrastructure, Rob Dickson said: “As always, we treat the primary network first and can only reach the secondary network after treating the primary routes.

“We have had the situation this morning where fresh snow has been falling on top of previously treated roads.

“This means our crews need to go back and re-treat the primary routes - and one route can take up to four hours to complete. Not all roads can ever be black in these conditions.

“We continue to ask drivers for their patience during this time while our crews continue to do their very best with the resources available.

“We are continuing to monitor the weather situation and will keep the public informed as best we can.”

All schools are open in the Borders but 15 school transport routes were cancelled and four were partially running.

Around four inches of snow fell on towns such as Galashiels this morning, and a number of vehicles were involved in minor accidents, including two cars forced off the road near Gordon.

The A68 at Carter Bar remained open throughout the day despite reports of lorries struggling to negotiate the border road.

Cold temperatures are expected to continue this week, meaning drivers face the prospect of icy roads.
