This year’s wet summer seemed to favour vegetable gardeners with a fine showing at the Melrose Flower Show in the Parish Church.

Competition was also particularly strong in the industrial sections with one of the highest numbers of entries in craftwork for years, with several entrants taking part for the first time.

The committee would like to thank the girls from Melrose Guides for their invaluable help with the show.

Cups and trophies:- sweet peas, George Goodfellow; best vase of gladioli, Billy Sowman; best vase of roses, and most points in flower section, Richard Gordon; most points in fruit section, Philiphaugh Gardens; most points in the vegetable section, Jim Mercer; most points in baking, Matthew Jamieson; most points in craftwork, Jo Hanson; best exhibit in the show (this year from the Craftwork section), Betty Turnbull; floral arrangement using five blooms, Betty Turnbull; most points in floral art, Susan Graham; most points in classes 97-103 in the children’s section, Blair McGowan; most points in craftwork in the children’s section, Alice MacBrayne.
