A SOLDIER serving with The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, has been shot dead by a person dressed in Afghan army uniform.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the killing on Remembrance Sunday saying the incident was an “insider attack” at Patrol Base Shawqat in the Nad-e Ali area of Helmand province.

The soldier’s next of kin has been informed and further details including identity are expected to be released later today.

The death brings the total number of members of the UK military to have died in Afghanistan since operations started in 2001, to 438.

Over 60 soldiers serving with the Nato coalition have been killed this year by their Afghan colleagues in so-called “green on blue” attacks.

Yesterday’s death of the soldier from 1 SCOTS means the number of British servicemen killed by Afghan soldiers or police now totals 12 this year.

Military spokesman Major Laurence Roche, said: “This is incredibly sad news for the battalion and everyone serving in Task Force Helmand.

“As we mark Remembrance this weekend, our thoughts now turn to the soldier’s family and friends whose loss is so much greater than ours”.
