Reoffending rates spark ‘get tough’ call

Borders Tory MSP John Lamont has called for tougher sentencing after figures from the Scottish Government this week showed that more than a quarter of convicted offenders in the region are reconvicted within the year for another offence. Of the 802 offenders convicted in 2009-10, 26.2% had committed another crime within the year.

Although the figures are lower than the Scottish average, Mr Lamont hit out at the SNP’s soft touch on crime.

“It will leave many Borders residents wondering if our justice is providing enough punishment,” Mr Lamont said. “If the sentences being handed down are not proving enough of a deterrent to stop criminals from reoffending, it is clear that we need to get tougher.
