POLICE who arrested a Hawick man this week for allegedly vandalising the town’s historic 1514 Memorial (Horse) monument have thanked local residents and the media for their assistance with their enquiries.

The incident, which saw the shaft of the flag snapped off, occurred between November 18 and 21.

Inspector Paula Clark commented: “Following the incident being reported to police, I dedicated office immediately to ensure those responsible were brought to justice as quickly as possible.

“This has not been an easy enquiry but our persistence and determination subsequently provided us with a positive lead.

“There has been a great deal of anger expressed from local community groups and members of the public and it was important that we acted quickly to provide re-assurance that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

“The efforts of my officers as well as the assistance of the public and the media cannot be underestimated, and I am pleased that we can now bring this incident to a close.”

A report regarding the 28-year-old arrested man has been sent to the procurator fiscal.
