Policeman injured and blowtorch used in bid to fire cars at Innerleithen

A POLICEMAN was taken to hospital with an eye injury after an early morning incident at Innerleithen, writes Bob Burgess.

A 47-year-old man is being quizzed after a blowtorch was used in a bid to set fire to a number of cars.

Police say they recovered two knives and a quantity of drugs after two cars were searched in the High Street and Buccleuch Street.

It is believed that the man being held is suspected of driving his Subaru Impreza at police cars before making off with police following him.

The man is understood to have driven at the police vehicles in his own car before switching to his works car and again driving at the police vehicles. He was eventually subdued by police officers using CS spray.

Attempts to set fire to vehicles were not successful. A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said ; “A number of vehicles, including police cars, were damaged during this incident.”

The drama unfolded between 3am and 6am today and the arrested man is assisting police with their enquiries.

The injuries to the policeman are not believed to be serious.
