A group of pupils from various Borders high schools are preparing to give up their beds for the night for some unusual fundraising in aid of the Vine Trust Peru expedition, writes Jessica Simpson.
The youngsters will be taking part in a half-marathon from Duns to Eyemouth, pushing a bed as they go. They will then be camping overnight in the grounds of Eyemouth Baptist Church in cardboard shelters they will make themselves.
The group, who head off to Peru next June with the Vine Trust, hope to make as much money as possible to help with the cost of their trip.
During their 16 days in Peru, the students will be working in three orphanages in the city of Iquitos, teaching the children basic English. They will also be on board a hospital ship, which gives remote communities living on the banks of the Amazon life-saving medical assistance.
Avril Tobin, one of the group’s organisers said: “The children heard about The Vine Trust from modern studies teacher, Richard Burrell. It caught their imagination – they are all good kids who want to make a difference to children who are less fortunate than themselves. They will be helping to build an orphanage. They know it will be challenging, and certainly not a holiday.”
