Peak fitness required for latest Borders Barmy Army plot
THE barmier the better it seems for fundraisers Borders Barmy Army (BBA).
The sartorially-sound charity helpers, who are always clad in kilts for their events, have lined up the Three Peaks Challenge for next year. And they want 30 guests to join them.
Their efforts in scaling Britain’s three tallest mountains – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – will be in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support at the Borders General Hospital and other local charities.
BBA chairman Steve Mellor said: “We have had quite a lot of interest in it and four or five people have pre-registered already.
“It’s the kind of thing walkers want to do, it’s a proper challenge and it’s a notable challenge.”
But first the charity nuts will finish this year’s events: they’ve already knocked off the London Marathon, the Loch Ness 26-miler is next month and their assault on the New York Marathon is in November.
Meanwhile, there is the date with Kelso Races, where the Borders Barmy Army National Pantomime Horse Race takes place to raise funds for the BGH Macmillan Cancer Centre on Saturday, October 15, when Grove Bedding, reigning champions, plan to defend their title.
A spokesperson for the BBA said: “This is a novel and great way for local businesses to advertise and donate to a renowned and deserving charity.
“The Borders Barmy Army goes from strength to strength as we continue to raise money for local causes.”

Next May, on Saturday 19, kilt-clad fundraisers will take a coach from Galashiels to Ben Nevis, before being driven to Scafell Pike, which they will climb at night with head torches.
The team rests as they are driven to Wales for Snowdon.
The Lake District-based company, Distant Horizons, will guide the fundraisers up and down the mountains to help everyone complete the climbs.
And the BBA hopes to offer a training programme for participants and discounts for shoes and other equipment.
It is also looking for an official sponsor to help cover the costs of the transport, guides and food for the event.
The spokesperson said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in an incredible endurance event with the Borders Barmy Army: this will be an experience they will never forget.”
