Border MSPs have urged managers of Hawick’s St Andrews Care Home to resolve staff disputes over short pay.
Last week we revealed its owners, Bradford-based Park Homes, voluntarily suspended new admissions following a Care Inspectorate report, due to be published soon.
South Scotland MSP Paul Wheelhouse told us: “We must take on trust Park Homes’ assertion that existing residents’ care and welfare is not compromised by their current recruitment difficulties.
“ I would merely point out to them that if employee relations with management were more harmonious, the business would perhaps find it easier to retain and recruit the staff they need.
“I again urge the management to engage constructively.”
Local MSP John Lamont, who contacted Park Homes demanding something be done, added: “I have had several constituents contact me in the last few months regarding their pay situation at St. Andrews Care Home. There are more cases still coming in.
“There seems to be a fundamental problem with the company’s structure as they are clearly underpaying a large number of their staff.
“Despite discussing it with the managers, no progress seems to have been made. This is money that these staff members have rightfully earned.
“With many of them being owed a significant sum, it is unreasonable to expect them to be able to survive without this money.”
