POLICE say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a Selkirk man whose body was found in a burn in the Bannerfield area of the town on Sunday morning.

The grim discovery was made by a male passer-by walking near the Long Philip Burn, about 20 yards from where it joins the Ettrick Water, a little before 11am.

Ambulance personnel removed the body of Stuart Hannah, 27, who lived nearby, from the water and police cordoned off the area, which is close to the Ettrick road bridge and behind the former depot of Scottish Borders Council, for several hours.

“It is normal practice with such incidents, when we don’t immediately know the cause of death, to seal and protect the area which officers investigate,” said a police spokesman.

“However, initial enquiries indicate there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Hannah’s death and, pending a post mortem, a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

The spokesman said Mr Hannah had last been seen alive on Saturday evening.
