Legal mysteries explained for pupils
pupils across the Borders are to be given lessons in law, writes Bob Burgess.
More than 60 primary and secondary schools in the area will be able to access a special website, thanks to funding provided by law firm Davidson Chalmers LLP.
One aim is to emphasise that as well as providing rights, laws also bring personal responsibility.
Davidson Chalmers is funding the Schools Law and Citizenship Web which has the support of the Law Society of Scotland and is proving popular with teachers.
The programme is run by teachers and a key feature is the use of current news stories to bring citizenship and other legal topics to life in the classroom.
The project also introduces pupils to legal concepts and terms they will encounter later in life.
Andy Drane, who heads Davidson Chalmers in the Borders and lives in the area with his family, commented: “This is a very worthwhile initiative which helps pupils understand the vital role law plays in our society.”
The Law Society of Scotland’s director of education and training, Liz Campbell, commented: “We are delighted Davidson Chalmers is supporting this imaginative programme in the Borders.
“It helps break down some of the misconceptions and stereotypes which still persist about lawyers and the work they do.”
The director of the Schools Law and Citizenship Web, Patrick Gaffney, added: “We can only make a difference in schools if we gain the support of the wider community. I am extremely grateful to the company for coming on board. Indeed, I am pleased to say the support from law firms throughout the country has been remarkable. They are clearly keen to increase the understanding of young people.
“Over 300,000 pupils have now been catered for and the legal profession deserves great credit for this.”
