Jeffries spices up his lunchtime with trip to Kelso
Rugby star John Jeffrey took time out on Monday to visit Kelso High School for the launch of School Meals Week.
Some 2,000 primary schools and 376 secondary schools across Scotland, are taking part in the event, which aims to show off some of the best things about school meals.
During the week, Assist FM, the Association for all the facilities management providers within Scotland’s 32 local authorities, has been promoting the meals that the top three school cooks created in this year’s Scottish School Cook of The Year competition. All meals are freshly made from great ingredients, and represent the fantastic skill set that many of our school cooks have.
One of the judges in the Scottish School Cook of The Year final was Joe Queen, Executive Chef of Braehead Foods. He said: “I have judged many competitions but the standard of this competition was absolutely fantastic. Not only did all the competitors have superb work practices but their skills for creating such great tasting food on such a tight budget is testament to the skills that exist in many Scottish schools around the country. It is something to be really proud of.”
To tie in with the event a food website has been set up – www.scottishschoolmeals.co.uk – offering information for parents and pupils on nutrition, positive health and zero waste.
School menus from across Scotland will be fully interactive and will include full recipe and nutritional information for all main meals. As well as this, individual councils will be able to offer monthly promotions.
Bill Kennedy, National Chair of ASSIST, said: “We are really excited about Scottish School Meals Week and the launch of our new consumer website.
“Scotland has led the way in the UK when it comes to producing healthy balanced school meals.
“The food and drink industry is one of Scotland’s biggest employers, and it’s a great industry to work in. With these initiatives we hope that we can help develop our young people’s tastes and interest in food for the foreseeable future.”
