Increased road repair inspections
THERE will be increased inspections of road repairs carried out by utility companies in the Borders, the council has revealed.
Councillor Gordon Edgar, executive member for roads and infrastructure, told a meeting of the full council last week that more inspections will be carried out towards the end of the two-year period that such repairs are guaranteed for.
He added that the guarantee period was also in the process of being reviewed at a national level.
His comments followed a question from Councillor Tom Weatherston, who asked whether the council’s roads department should be “more robust” in insisting that utility companies reinstate surfaces to a higher standard on completion of works.
Mr Edgar responded: “Inspections and biannual coring programmes are carried out to determine compliance and there is no indication from this data within Scottish Borders Council of non-compliance with current standards.”
But, Mr Weatherston responded: “There are many areas that are like patchwork quilts. I think we should get these people back to fix it properly.”
He also argued that the two-year guarantee period should be extended.
